The Mission

The mission of Discover & Explore Montessori is to respect and to nurture a passion for learning in the young child. We strive to give children the best possible start in life through the development and enhancement of cognitive, linguistic, motor, social-emotional, and self-help learning skills in an authentic Montessori environment.

A variety of hands-on materials facilitate self-directed learning.

The Montessori curriculum is all-encompassing, designed specifically to engage the child’s whole being. Because the child learns by doing, the brain is actively forming connections based on first-hand experiences and initiative. Dr. Montessori’s awareness of brain function and sensitive periods are integrated into the Montessori materials, to build on your child’s natural interest in:

·         Language, opening the door to writing, reading, and the parts of speech.

·         Counting, introducing and understanding of the decimal system and processes of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

·         Artistic self-expression, through the introduction of various skills and media.

What Happens in the Classroom

Primary Curriculum

The primary curriculum is divided into three basic areas: Practical Life, Sensorial, and Intellectual.

In the Practical Life area, children are engaged in activities designed to help them learn to: care for themselves (dressing), care for their environment (food preparation, sweeping, cutting, pouring, care of plants, use of tools), and begin to develop skills in social customs (greeting, apologizing, interrupting). The other benefits of these activities are: concentration, performing tasks in a logical sequence, control of movement, independence, order, respect, responsibility, and resourcefulness.

Sensorial Area

The Sensorial Area helps children order and classify the impressions received by their senses. These include activities for tasting, smelling, hearing, visual perception, and touch. The outdoor areas are used daily for the development of large muscles and coordination.

Intellectual Area

The Intellectual Area includes math, language, science, history, geography, botany, zoology, art, and music. It is expected that children remain at Discover & Explore Montessori for the full developmental program to benefit from the cumulative effects of this educational method. The child who completes this primary program (at least three years, depending on the child’s birth date) has developed the self-confidence, motivation, and sense of direction that distinguish children who have a passion for learning.
